Mandarincello

Course: Drinks

Ingredients

  • 12 large fresh mandarins
  • 1 bottle (750ml) vodka
  • 4 cups sugar syrup (recipe follows)

Sugar Syrup

  • 4 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  • Carefully wash and dry the mandarins. Remove their peels using a vegetable peeler. Put the peels, vodka, and sugar syrup into an airtight glass jar, preferably one with a glass lid and rubber seal. Store in a cool dark place for at least one month, but no more than three months. Strain the peels and transfer the alcohol to small glass bottles. Chill or freeze before serving. Serve small portions in cordial glasses.
  • Sugar Syrup
Stir the sugar into the water in a saucepan. Bring it to a boil over medium high heat. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sugar melts and the mixture thickens slightly, for 3-5 minutes. Cool and refrigerate. It will keep for 2-3 weeks.
